This is a year course in Fine Art for grades 9-12. The course follows the California Visual Arts Framework: Artistic Perception, Creative Expression In 3-Dimension, Aesthetic Valuing, Historical & Cultural Context, and Careers Relationships.
In the typical classroom the student will have the opportunity to explore
a wide variety of techniques and media such as Paper Mache, Plaster, Wire, Clay, Cardboard, Paper, and Balsa Foam. Because we are distant learning, we will use limited supplies. I will have a separate handout with those materials. If you do not have access to the materials on the list I can try and lend out some supplies.
Major Objectives:
Familiarize students with the Principles and Elements of Design in a 3-Dimensional art form.
Develop skills in drawing 3D Art.
Explore and experience a variety of media.
Learn the use and care of the tools specific to fine art
Develop critique skills and use them to evaluate art projects
Explore historical and current influences and effects on the arts
Class Supplies: 2 Fine Tip and 2 Ultra Fine Tip Sharpies
CLASS CONDUCT
1. Be on Time: Although our time is spent on Google Meet, I expect your attendance and participation to be the same as if we were in the room together. I will take attendance at the start of class and at the end with interaction in between.
2. Be respectful! Follow my instructions and be quiet when in Google Meet. IF I need you to mute your mic, please do so. If I ask for you to not talk, please do so and listen so I don’t have to talk over extra noise.
3. Be READY and ENGAGED . I would like you to have your pencil and sketchbook ready at the beginning of every class.
4. Be Positive! Remember that you are in a good spot being able to take a class where you can be creative and learn new skills. You will get out of the class what you put into it. In other words, when you stay positive and motivated, you will learn more and enjoy the whole experience of doing art distant learning.
ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY
The Torrey Pines High School Academic Honesty Policy will be strictly enforced. All work must be your own: this includes the ideas/concepts as well as the actual production of the artwork. Artists are influenced by other artists and the world around them. If you use materials or ideas that are not your own, you must properly cite these sources (bibliography). If caught cheating -- using or "borrowing" someone else's work or imagery (whether it is another student's work or something from the web) -- you will receive a "0" on that assignment in addition to disciplinary action. (referral to assistant principal)
CELL PHONE POLICY
Please do not have your phones on or distracting you during our time together on Google Meet!
ATTENDANCE AND TARDY POLICY
You are expected to be on time and ready to work when we begin our Google Meet. I will take attendance at the start of class and end and in between participation will count.
GRADING POLICY
Evaluation of student work is based on the following criteria:
• development of skills/techniques and materials: painting skills, the elements of art, and the principles of design
• creativity/concepts/ideas: show original and complex thought
• craftsmanship and use of materials
• effort and participation
Grading of art will be based solely on the student and their individual performance. Students will not be compared to one another, but rather graded on their own desire to challenge themselves.
“A” work is outstanding and exceeds expectations. It demonstrates divergent/creative thought, excellent technique, is insightful, and communicates a strong, individual student voice.
“B” work is good. It demonstrates potential in technique and creativity.
“C” work meets and fulfills requirements.
“D” work may not meet requirements and lacks effort.
“F” work does not meet requirements.
Assignments/projects will be graded on a standard point scale. Your grade will comprise of approximately the following:
1. Studio Performance -20%
2. Sketchbook and Assignments -30%
3. Projects -50%
LATE WORK
Turn your assignments in on time. I will accept late work, but will lower it 1 % for each class meeting it is late. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make-up your work. You may need to complete an assignment at home or come into class at lunch to make-up your work. If you are absent the day an assignment is due, you must submit the assignment the day you return. Unexcused absences will automatically receive the late penalty.
STUDIO PERFORMANCE
Daily participation and EFFORT during Google Meet just like in class: this includes staying on task and committing all your effort to your art-making, abiding by classroom rules, participating in class discussions and critiques, cleaning your supplies and table, completing your table job - will all be evaluated as STUDIO PERFORMANCE. Unexcused absences will affect your studio grade negatively.
*On task means working on Painting assignments only - all period. If you are off task your studio performance grade will go down.
Materials:
I will give you a separate list of materials with links to amazon that you can get on your own. I understand not everyone has access to materials, please know that if you cannot get any, then I have a few supplies to lend out that I will expect to be returned. Your grade will also not be affected but I highly recommend and encourage you to get the supplies to have a full experience in this class.
The 2 materials that we use every time we meet is a Sketchbook and drawing (sketching) pencils. I would prefer your sketchbook is at least 8X10.
