Sculpture Projects
Assignment: Create a soap sculpture either in Relief or in the Round out of an Ivory bar of soap. 2 class periods
Materials: Carving tools, at least 3 bars of Ivory soap (practice), Xacto knife, carving tools, loop tool, placemat.
Resources: Class Presentation
Directions : Start by brainstorming what you will make, you must be able to draw it and it should be simple enough for you to draw. Do NOT do anything with thin shapes sticking out as that may break.
1. Take your bar of soap and trace the rectangle shape at least 3 times in your sketchbook
2. You will do 3 separate drawings of 3 ideas. Make sure all edges of your drawing touch the edges of your rectangle because it will only get smaller when you carve.
3. Choose your favorite idea and get approval from teacher.
4. Cut out the rectangle
5. Place on top of your soap and tape down. Using a needle tool, transfer your image by poking the holes through the lines on your drawing.
6. When you have it transferred, then take off the paper and start caving away the excess using various tools

Tips for Success-
- Carve slowly so soap doesn't break.
- Draw something you can achieve with no small pieces sticking out
- Be patient and have expectations that you may break a bar or 2 before you get it.
- When using an Xacto knife, always hold it pointing away from you.
